Windows FAQ

Why are my windows being replaced?

The existing windows, being over 15 years old, fail to meet the required energy efficiency standards. When installing External Wall Insulation (EWI), it is a common practice to install new windows beforehand to ensure the insulation fits snugly against the panes. The current windows, however, would not allow the EMI system to achieve optimal coverage. Moreover, replacing the windows during the EWI installation is more efficient, as it avoids the need for re-scaffolding in the future. This approach ensures the job is done correctly and only once.

What material are new windows made from?

Your new windows are made from aluminium and a powder coasted in white. They feature a central thermal break that effectively prevents cold from passing through the system, enhancing insulation and energy efficiency.

The windows are supplied by SMART SYSTEMS, who are the UK's largest aluminium systems company providing a substantial range of residential and commercial glazing, windows and doors.

What colour are the windows?

The windows are white both inside and out.

How secure will my new windows be?

These windows have been upgraded to meet the Secured by Design (SBD) specification. This includes enhanced locks and laminated glass, significantly boosting their security features.

Are trickle vents installed, if so, which windows are they on and what do they do?

Yes, trickle vents are installed on all windows except those in the kitchens and bathrooms, where fans are being installed. Trickle vents allow for a continuous, controlled flow of fresh air, helping to improve ventilation and reduce condensation without compromising security.

Are my new windows energy efficient?

The aluminium frame windows have been excellent thermal performance. They are engineered to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This efficiency reduces the energy required for heating and cooling, leading to lower energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint.

Will my new windows reduce the noise level?

Your new windows will noticeably reduce noise compared to your existing ones.

Will someone explain how to open/close and lock them once they have been installed?

After the installation has been completed, the fitters will give you a demonstration on how to operate your windows and doors. Along with this you will receive an Operational and Maintenance manual.

Do my new windows need maintenance?

Yes, regular maintenance will prolong the life of your windows. This is all explained in the Operational and Maintenance manual that you will be issued with at the end of the installation.

What is the lifespan of my new windows and is there a guarantee?

When properly maintained according to the operational and maintenance manual, these windows can last 25 to 35 years. They come with a 10-year warranty on the glass, covering unit failure and fogging but not breakage. Additionally, the main frame is guaranteed for 10 years, and all moving parts are covered for 1 year.

Will my new window be double glazed?

Yes, they are a 28mm thick glass unit filled with an argon gas to help achieve better U-values. Additionally, the glass features a solar control coating that helps reduce heat gain from sunlight.

What preparation would I have to do before my scheduled window installation?

Before your scheduled window installation, please follow these steps to ensure a smooth and efficient process:

Clear the Area: Remove all items from window ledges and surrounding areas. Ensure everything is moved at least 1 meter away from the window area.

Furniture: If you prefer us not to move your furniture, you may need to sign a disclaimer. Please let your Resident Liaison Officer (RLO) know if you need assistance with moving items.

Safety: A clear safe will make the installation work easier and safer for everyone involved. By preparing your space, you help ensure the installation is completed efficiently and safely.

How long will the installation process last? And do I need to be at home whilst the works are taking place?

The window installation process is designed to be completed within a day, provided there are no unforeseen delays. However, if there are any hold-ups, we may need to return the following day to finish the work. While it is not strictly necessary for you to be at home during the installation, it is recommended. Your presence can be helpful in case any questions or issues arise. If you cannot be at home, please make arrangements with your Resident Liaison Officer (RLO).

Are restrictors fitted to each window?

Yes, restrictors are fitted to each window. Depending on the type of window, they are either built into the hinges or integrated within the handle. We will demonstrate the operation of these restrictors at the end of the installation day.

How many keys will I be provided with?

You will receive 3 keys for the door and 1 key for each window handle.
